Cape Cod

Wellfleet

Wellfleet often proclaims itself as the 'Art Gallery Town,' and a stroll down its main streets proves that to be an appropriate name. Both casual and serious art buyers come here for some of the greatest talent the Cape has to offer. Small wonder that this is an artist's paradise - Wellfleet's natural beauty is indeed inspiring. There is the true aura here of what Cape Cod was like in the old days...more isolation and always the closeness of the ocean. The Atlantic Ocean is to the east and Cape Cod Bay is to the west - both sides of this narrow town are waterside. A huge tract of moors, marsh and forest comprise the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary on Wellfleet Bay, where you can catch glimpses of various native wildlife and beautiful birds. Take a drive along Chequesset Neck Road for some awesome scenery, and then do a walking tour of Great Island for some lovely, quiet Bayside moments. Much of the inner coast of Wellfleet is oyster country, where local shell-fishermen dig 'Wellfleet's finest,' those tasty silvery oysters, to send around the world.

The Atlantic side also boasts some spectacular beaches with towering dunes and roaring surf. And don't miss Marconi Station for a spine-tingling display of the first wireless station.
