Sandwich

Sandwich is the oldest Cape town, established in 1637 by some of the Plymouth Pilgrims, and its history is its pride and joy. The town center is brimming with beautiful historical jewels - the old Grist Mill on the shore of Shawme Pond, the gleaming white spire of the First Church of Christ reaching up endlessly into the blue sky, the handsome Dan'l Webster Inn, and hundreds of elegant old colonial homes gracing the lush landscape. There are some great little shops and galleries along Main Street, and keep your eyes open for the Doll Museum - quite unique, inside and out! Every spot in this town looks like one of those Kodachrome 'New England Landscape' calendars.

Take a tour of the Hoxie House, built in 1675. It was occupied until the 1970s, but was never modernized with electricity or plumbing, and has now been turned into a wonderful little museum, an authentic slice of simple colonial life. The Sandwich Glass Museum houses some spectacular, vividly colored examples of the glass that has become world-famous, made right here since 1825. Children will love the Thornton Burgess Museum, where they can learn about Peter Rabbit and his Briar Patch chums first-hand. Don't miss Heritage Plantation - a magical world!
